Piedmont (Piemonte), or "The foot of the mountains", is the birthplace of the modern Italian State, the originator of such Italian staples as vermouth, Fiats and bread sticks, and a beautiful region full of surprises.
To the north and west are some of the most important peaks of the Alps, France and Switzerland, and to the south are the green Maritime Alps and the sea. Between the Alps and the Po River are miles of rolling vine covered hills with some of the worlds most prestigious vineyards and the source of white truffles. In the center lies the regional capital Turin (Torino), a charming Baroque city.
